UNDERSTANDING CHRONIC LOW BACK PAIN
Chronic low back pain is generally defined as persistent discomfort in the lumbar spine lasting longer than three months, distinguishing it from a short-term acute flare-up. Because the spine bears so much of the body’s load, it’s especially vulnerable to cumulative mechanical stress over time.
Pain can originate from several structures at once — discs, facet joints, ligaments, muscles, and nerve roots which is part of why chronic back pain can be complex to pin down without a thorough evaluation.
Left unaddressed, ongoing back pain can contribute to muscle deconditioning and further functional limitation over time.
OUR APPROACH & DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS
Every visit begins with a comprehensive clinical evaluation, including a review of your history, symptoms, and prior treatments.
Diagnostic evaluation typically combines a hands-on clinical assessment, including posture, mobility, and strength testing, with imaging when appropriate, such as X-ray, MRI, or diagnostic ultrasound for soft tissue. Selective lab work may also be considered when needed to help rule out inflammatory or autoimmune causes.
Based on this evaluation, our team will discuss the full range of options available starting with conservative approaches such as physical therapy and activity modification, and moving toward regenerative treatment approaches when clinically appropriate.
Treatment options that may be discussed include PRP, Shockwave Therapy, Stem Cell, and Exosome approaches. Surgical referral is reserved for cases involving neurologic compromise or when conservative and regenerative approaches have not provided adequate relief.
Not every patient is a candidate for every treatment our goal is to recommend what is appropriate for your specific presentation, and to be direct with you if a particular option isn’t a good fit.
