TREATMENT MODALITIES

EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCKWAVE THERAPY (ESWT)

A non-invasive treatment approach that uses focused acoustic energy to support the body’s natural repair processes.

EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCKWAVE THERAPY (ESWT)

WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that delivers controlled acoustic energy to targeted tissue using a handheld applicator. It is typically performed without anesthesia and may be considered when conservative approaches, including rest, activity modification, or physical therapy, have not provided adequate improvement.

HOW IT WORKS

Focused acoustic energy creates controlled pressure changes within targeted tissue. This process supports collagen production, blood-vessel formation, tissue remodeling, and changes in local pain signaling.

WHEN ESWT IS USED

ESWT may be considered for selected chronic musculoskeletal conditions, including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, tennis or golfer’s elbow, shoulder tendinopathy, and certain hip or knee conditions.

Not every patient or condition is appropriate for shockwave therapy. Treatment selection depends on your specific condition and clinical findings. ESWT may also be combined with PRP or other regenerative approaches when appropriate.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1

IN-OFFICE TREATMENT

ESWT sessions are performed in-office and are typically brief, with no extended treatment time required.
2

AFTER TREATMENT

Temporary soreness may occur after treatment and generally resolves as the treated area recovers.
3

EXPECTED TIMELINE

Improvement develops gradually over several weeks as the treated tissue responds and undergoes remodeling.
FAQ

Common Questions

Most patients tolerate ESWT well, although mild discomfort may occur during treatment depending on tissue sensitivity and the treatment area.
Improvement typically develops gradually over several weeks as the treated tissue responds and progresses through its remodeling process.

In selected cases, ESWT may be combined with PRP or another treatment approach. Your provider will determine what is appropriate for your condition.

DETERMINE IF ESWT IS RIGHT FOR YOU

ESWT is considered following a comprehensive clinical evaluation. Schedule a consultation to discuss your condition, treatment goals, and whether shockwave therapy is an appropriate option for your care.
